Which type of Malaysian marriage certificate?

Malaysia has two parallel marriage systems. ICA accepts both — but each requires a different translation approach.

Sijil Perkahwinan

Issued by JPN (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara). Applies to non-Muslim Malaysians — Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and civil marriages. Multi-section form with stamps and JPN serial numbers.

Sijil Nikah

Issued by the state Pejabat Agama Islam. Contains Akad Nikah particulars, Wali details, Mas Kahwin and Ta’liq — all fields require full translation for ICA submission.

Avoid costly delays

Why translations get rejected

A rejected submission means a delayed application. These are the most common causes — and how our process prevents each one.

  • Ta'liq, Mas Kahwin or Wali fields left untranslated (Sijil Nikah)

  • State Pejabat Agama stamps not translated or described

  • Name mismatch vs passport spelling

  • Machine translation — not accepted by ICA or MOM

  • Missing notarisation — mandatory for all submissions since October 2019

  • Certified translation submitted when notarisation was required

  • Acceptance guarantee: if your ICA or MOM submission is rejected due to an error in our translation or notarisation we correct it at no charge.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about this document type for MOM and ICA Singapore.

Does ICA require a notarised translation of a Malaysian marriage certificate?
Yes. For ICA LTVP, PR and Citizenship, ICA accepts translations notarised by a Notary Public in Singapore or from the issuing country. A translation from a private company alone — with no notarisation — is not accepted by ICA. Since October 2019, a notarisation stamp is also required.
What is the difference between Sijil Perkahwinan and Sijil Nikah for ICA translation?

A Sijil Perkahwinan is issued by JPN for civil (non-Muslim) marriages. A Sijil Nikah is issued by the state Pejabat Agama Islam for Muslim marriages and contains additional fields — Wali, Mas Kahwin and Taklik — that must all be translated for ICA.

Does my Sijil Nikah need SAL authentication for ICA?

Yes. Since October 2019, all notarised documents — including Sijil Nikah translations — must be SAL-authenticated or a notarisation done in the country of origin e.g. Malaysia.

Do Taklik, Mas Kahwin and Wali fields need to be translated in a Sijil Nikah?

Yes. All fields in the Sijil Nikah must be translated, including the Taklik (conditional divorce clause), Wali (guardian), Mas Kahwin (dowry amount), and Akad Nikah particulars. Omitting any of these is one of the most common causes of Sijil Nikah rejection.

Does my marriage certificate need to be translated for a Dependant's Pass?

Yes. MOM requires a certified English translation of your marriage certificate to establish the spousal relationship when applying for a Dependant’s Pass for Employment Pass, S Pass and EntrePass holders.

How much does marriage certificate translation cost in Singapore?

At certified-translation.co, certified translation starts from S$60 and notarised translation (Notary Public + SAL) starts from S$150. Final pricing depends on document complexity and is confirmed before work begins.

Can I submit my certificate by WhatsApp or email?

Yes. Send a clear scan or photograph by WhatsApp or email. We’ll review it, identify the certificate type and confirm requirements and pricing — usually within the same working day.

How long does notarised translation take?

Standard turnaround is 24–48 hours for translation and certification. SAL authentication typically adds 1–2 working days. Urgent same-day service is available on request.
